Prostate biopsy

If your prostate is suspicious of harboring cancer, biopsy is advised to obtain prostate tissue. The biopsy is performed in our clinic by perineal approach.

In order to optimize the informative value, we already perform these combined, i.e. systematic plus targeted, biopsies as part of the initial biopsy. As a rule, in addition to the systematic 12-fold biopsy, 2-3 samples are obtained from each of the lesions that are conspicuous in the MRI.

MRI fusion biopsy is usually performed in our clinic as a day-case procedure under local anesthesia. If there are reasons for not using local anesthesia, the procedure can also be performed under sedation. If there is an increased risk of a post-interventional complication, e.g. risk of postoperative bleeding with ongoing anticoagulation or urinary retention with a very large prostate, we perform the procedure under inpatient conditions.

In order to make the examination and treatment process as smooth as possible for our patients, we require some relevant information in advance of the MRI-guided prostate biopsy. This helps us to optimally prepare the respective procedure and minimize possible risks. If an external multi-parametric MRI of the prostate is not available, imaging can be performed by the Department of Radiology at the University Hospital Dresden.
