The University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden offers medical care at the highest level. As a maximum care hospital, it covers the entire spectrum of modern medicine. The spatial and technical equipment of the University Hospital is constantly being updated. Most recently, the new House 32 was commissioned at the end of 2018, which, in addition to the Surgical Emergency Department, houses 17 state-of-the-art operating theatres, an intensive care unit, interdisciplinary outpatient clinics and 132 beds distributed across four nursing wards.

With 1,410 beds and 201 places for the day-care treatment of patients, it is one of the largest hospitals in Saxony and at the same time the only maximum-care hospital in eastern Saxony. The catchment area extends from Görlitz to Glauchau, from Bad Brambach to Hoyerswerda.

Around 1,000 doctors cover the entire spectrum of modern medicine at Dresden University Hospital. 2,000 nurses and carers look after the well-being of patients.

In addition to its central purpose, the care of the sick, Dresden University Hospital also fulfils tasks of education, training and further education of medical staff as well as in the public health sector.

Since 1 July 1999 the University Hospital has been a public law institution of the Free State of Saxony. Decisions can therefore be made more quickly and directly on site. The organs of the University Hospital are the Supervisory Board and the Board of Directors.
