Neurochemistry

profeisenhofer.jpgProf. Dr. G. Eisenhofer -  Chief of the division of Neurochemistry

Research Program / Curriculum Vitae
My research background includes preclinical and clinical studies focusing on autonomic nervous and neuroendocrine systems and their role in a diverse range of clinical disorders, from alcoholism, hypertension, heart failure, obesity, autonomic failure, Parkinson’s disease, to more recent emphasis on neuroendocrine tumors.

Measurements of catecholamines and catecholamine metabolites (e.g., metanephrines, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol) in biological fluids and tissues provide the mainstay analytical techniques in my laboratory. These techniques are being utilized in clinical care for the diagnosis of catecholamine-producing neuroendocrine tumors, in particular paragangliomas and adrenal pheochromocytomas.

I am a founder member and scientific co-chair of the Pheochromocytoma REsearch Support ORganization (PRESSOR), an international consortium of health science professionals dedicated to research into improving the diagnosis, localization, management and treatment of pheochromocytoma. My most recent research interests in this direction include molecular studies, employing microarray and proteomics technologies, directed at understanding the development and identifying markers for diagnosis and targets for treatment of neuroendocrine tumors.
