Plastic and urethral surgery

Today, obstructions of the upper ureter can be treated by minimally invasive surgery. The keyhole technique reduces postoperative scarring and pain. At our institution, we routinely perform robotic laparoscopic surgery (link).

Urethral scars often related to as urethral strictures can cause urinary obstruction and impair bladder voiding significantly, often accompanied by a weakening of the urinary stream. Depending on diagnostic findings, different surgical approaches are possible. For short strictures, a minimally invasive slitting of the urethra through the urethra is an option. In the case of recurrence, surgical resection of the stricture is recommended.

In severe cases of extensive strictures, plastic reconstruction of the urethra can be offered. In collaboration with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, reconstructing the urethra with mucosa from the cheek is regularly performed at our institution.
