Prostate Cancer

At our Prostate Cancer Center, we provide specialized care to patients who are either suspected of having prostate cancer or have already received a diagnosis. As one of the pioneering institutions in Germany, we have comprehensive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, and thus are able to offer the latest procedures to our patients. Our collaborative approach involves close coordination with radiation therapists, radiologists, pathologists, nuclear and laboratory medicine specialists, as well as psycho-oncologists as part of our multidisciplinary network. Therapy recommendations for patients are assessed by a multidisciplinary team of prostate cancer experts during our Urological Tumor Board (link).

For patients with suspected prostate cancer, we provide targeted prostate biopsies using advanced MRI/ultrasound fusion software. By overlaying pre-existing MRI images of the prostate onto the ultrasound image during the MRI fusion biopsy, we achieve precise targeting and sampling of suspicious areas, significantly enhancing the accuracy of prostate biopsies. The MRI can be performed either at an external radiology clinic or at our local Department of Radiology (link). The MRI fusion biopsy is also considered the standard procedure for active surveillance of low-risk prostate cancer

In patients with high-risk prostate cancer or suspicion of metastases after initial curative therapy, precise localization of tumor foci can be achieved through PSMA-PET imaging. To ensure the best outcomes, we maintain close collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Medicine (link).

For comprehensive treatment advice regarding localized prostate cancer, you can visit our surgical second opinion consultation (link) or the consultation hours for self-paying and privately insured patients (link).

As a curative surgical therapy for prostate cancer, we offer radical prostatectomy. This can be performed either as a minimally invasive robot-assisted procedure (link) or as a classic open surgery. Both techniques are performed in high volume by experienced prostate surgeons

As an alternative to surgical therapy, our Department of Urology provides Focal Therapy for prostate cancer. This organ-preserving procedure precisely treats the area of the prostate affected by the tumor, leading to fewer side effects. However, focal therapy can only be performed if specific criteria regarding tumor location and aggressiveness are met. We are pleased to offer individualized consultations in our Focal Therapy for Prostate Cancer consultation (link).

In cases where a tumor recurrence occurs in the lymph nodes despite initial curative treatment, we offer the option of tumor resection. The feasibility of this approach must be assessed on a case-by-case basis, requiring precise imaging localization of the metastases (link).

Through modern systemic therapies involving combined hormone therapy and chemotherapy, as well as targeted treatment options, we achieve effective and long-term cancer control even in cases of metastatic prostate cancer. Based on the latest research evidence, we conduct advanced systemic therapies and provide molecular diagnostics where appropriate. Our patients are cared for in the Uro-Oncology Consultation Hours (link). Additionally, we offer the opportunity to participate in novel promising therapy studies through our study center (link).
