Predoctoral Fellow/PhD student (f/m/x)

in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology/Immunology 

The position is available immediately. The expected duration is 3-4 years.

Our group investigates how hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells participate and interact in the complex process of blood cell generation. We use special labelling techniques to follow the differentiation and proliferation of stem and progenitor cells in the intact bone marrow niche. The DFG-funded research project focuses on DNA damage accumulation in the hematopoietic system and its role in leukemia development. Using an established mouse model (Schoedel et al., Blood 2016), which enables the targeted depletion of hematopoietic stem cells, we want to investigate how the interplay of largely division-inactive stem cells and strongly proliferating progenitor cells, can counteract the accumulation of genome damage in hematopoiesis. The project is carried out in cooperation with the research group "Theoretical Systems Biology" of Prof. Thomas Höfer, German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg.

Your tasks include:

  • Carrying out mouse experiments
  • Investigation of hematopoiesis and purification of cell populations using multicolor flow cytometry
  • Cultivation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells
  • High-throughput genome sequencing and single-cell gene expression analysis (in cooperation with a core facility)
  • Data analysis (in cooperation) and writing of scientific publications.

Your Profile:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology, medicine, pharmacy or related subjects
  • Practical experience in one of the following research areas is desired:cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or computational biology
  • Willingness to perform mouse experiments, a FELASA-B certificate would be optimal
  • Scientific enthusiasm and intrinsic motivation
  • Ability to integrate into a scientific team and a good command of the English language
