At the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden, the DFG-Center for Regenerative Therapies (Prof. Dr. Karsten Kretschmer, Chair of Molecular and Cellular Immunology / Focus Immune Regulation) and the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (Dr. Antonios Chatzigeorgiou, Research Group Immunometabolism) are looking for a highly motivated and talented

PhD Student (w/m)

on a part time basis (minimum 50%) starting as soon as possible. The salary is according to TV-L dispositions (TV-L E13). The contract is initially limited to 18 months with the option of an extension for another 18 months.

The research interests of Prof. Dr. Kretschmer focus on molecular and cellular pathways that govern the generation, lifestyle and function of Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells, which play an essential role in maintaining immune homeostasis in mice and men, but non-immune functions such as the control of adipose tissue homeostasis are also emerging. Dr. Antonios Chatzigeorgiou focuses on metabolic inflammation / dysregulation, adipose tissue homeostasis and obesity, which includes studies on both innate and adaptive immune responses in metabolic tissues (such as the adipose tissue) as well as macrophage polarization and immune cell interactions in obesity-associated inflammation. The position will give you an excellent chance for further academics study and research in a highly interdisciplinary and innovative area that combines immune regulation and immunometabolism (at PhD level, as a rule).

The PhD position we offer is part of the newly established DFG-funded Research Unit FOR2599: Type 2 Immunity: Mechanisms of Induction and Regulation. In this context, we aim to investigate how adipose tissue-residing Foxp3+ Treg cells and innate immune cells (such as eosinophils) cooperatively maintain metabolic adipose tissue homeostasis, employing unique mouse models, transcriptomics approaches, and in-depth immune and metabolic phenotyping. Your profile:

  • Outstanding masters university degree (or equivalent) in biology or related field of science
  • Experience in immunology, metabolism and obesity, flow cytometry, gene-targeted mouse models, cell culture and molecular/biochemical methods
  • Ability to work in an international team
  • Inter- and multidisciplinary thinking
  • High motivation
  • An integrative and cooperative personality with excellent communication and social skills
  • Fluency in English – written and oral
