Project 7

Role of innate immunity pattern recognition receptors in adrenocortical cell dysregulation during inflammation

This project will assess the role of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), including Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and intracellular NOD-like receptors (NLRs) for adrenal gland dysfunction during sepsis. A comprehensive approach will dissect whether SIRS-mediated adrenal gland dysfunction depends on the intact TLR-signaling in adrenal cells or recruited immune cells. Moreover, the role of NLRs, particularly NALP3 in adrenal steroidogenesis and dysfunction during sepsis will be investigated. These studies will not only improve our understanding of sepsis-related adrenal dysfunction but will provide also potential novel therapeutic targets for this pathology.
