Project 5

Novel diagnostic biomarkers of excessive aldosterone secretion in patients with aldosteronomas

This project will identify new biomarkers for aldosteronomas: the adrenochrome-based colourimetric test for use at the bedside during AVS; the plasma aldosterone:metanephrine ratio for identifying adrenal sources of aldosterone excess and documenting lateralisation of aldosterone secretion; steroidomic secretory profiles and inflammatory and vascular factors in adrenal venous blood and their relationship to differences in tumour biology as assessed by morphological, RT-PCR and immunohistochemical studies. This study will extend the state-of-the art in the differential diagnosis of patients with different forms of primary aldosteronism and potentially revolutionize current strategies for the treatment of this important and often curable form of secondary hypertension.
